The Maya Traditions’ Organic Medicinal Plant ‘Mother Garden’ was established in 1997 by Maya Traditions’ founder Jane Mintz and doctor and herbalist Anabella Perez. The garden was originally created to provide Maya women with the resources and training to improve their health and help their families through the use of medicinal plants.
Today the garden serves as a community resource, accessible to our artisans and healers, as well as community members interested in learning more about medicinal plants used in the Lake Atitlán region.
The growth of medicinal plants in our garden supports our Community Health Program, ensuring sustainability and access to traditional medicinal plants. From the plants grown at this garden, our staff produces various natural medicine products, which are made available to our community members. Maya Traditions’ staff and volunteers create organic medicinal teas, tinctures and soaps which are sold locally in Panajachel at Chalo’s and Sandra’s. Our products are also available for purchase on tours or in our office.
The garden is open to the community for tours Monday through Friday, and accommodates visitors who are interested in learning more in medicinal plants. Join us for a tour and learn more about the medicinal plants.
