Maya Traditions Journal > Artisan Spotlight: Francisca Tzep Cotiy

On a recent trip to the community of Nahuala, we sat down with Francisca to hear her story. She is an inspirational woman who creates the most beautiful textiles. Here is a little bFrancisca Tzep_for instagramit about her!

What is your name?

Francisca Tzep Cotiy

How old are you?

38 years old.

Tell us about your family.

I have a husband who works in construction and two sons who are 13 and 18 years old

Where do you live?

In the small village of Palanquix Guachiaquib´, which is a part of the community of Nahuala.

When and how did you learn to weave?

I learned from my mom when I was 14 years old. I was so excited to learn that I actually started practicing without any one teaching or helping me, but my weavings were not turning out. My mom saw how hard I was working and found the time to teach me. She shared some important tips and with a lot of practice I was able to continue to improve my abilities to what they are now. Unlike most people who first learn the technique for simple backstrap, I learned the elaborate technique of brocade from the beginning.

Where do you do your weaving?

I complete all of my weavings in my home.

What other responsibilities do you have, outside of weaving?

My job is to weave. On top of that I am responsible for all of the cleaning, washing, cooking and everything else necessary to maintain my home.

How long does it take you to finish a weaving?

It depends a lot on the design that I am working on. My specialty is brocade weaving, an elaborate technique in which the embroidery is integrated into the weaving process, which takes a long time. To create the textile for 1 pillow, it takes about 15 days working 7-8 hours a day.

How has your life changed thanks to weaving?

Weaving has allowed me to provide a better life for my children through education and a stable home. Weaving is how I support my household.

What does weaving mean to you?

To me weaving means dignity for women. Weaving is valuable art form and it is important to maintain it and celebrate it.
